There is no doubt that September 11th, 2001 was one of the most tragic events in American history. There have been some amazing movies made about the attack that are worth watching to really get an insight into that day. Let’s take a look at some of the most heartwrenching movies about 9-11.
Movies about 9/11
1. United 93
Written and directed by Paul Greengrass, this gives a scarily realistic account of what went on in the minds of the victims on that fateful day. It is about passengers fighting against the terrorists on United Flight 93 and how they took back the plane. It has some incredible acting throughout and even though it is a movie, it actually feels more like a documentary because of how realistic it is.
2. Zero Dark Thirty
This is a really cool movie that takes a look at the capture of Osama Laden, the man behind 9-11. It is directed by Katheryn Bigalow and although the CIA agent in zero dark thirty is made up, she was created from the testaments of the men who DID catch Bin Laden so it is very realistic.
3. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Starring Tom Hanks and Thomas Horn as a father and son duo, this is a very moving look into the children who lost their parents on that horrific day. In the movie, the dad dies and when coming to grief with his loss, the son discovers a whole lot more about his dad that helps him come to terms with the tragedy.
4. Reign Over Me
This is a movie by director Mike Binder and it stars Adam Sandler, telling the fictional story of a man who lost his wife and two daughters in the 9-11 attacks. He changes as a man after that day but friendship might help him come out the other side. If you want a beautiful watch that will make you shed a tear or two, this is one to watch.
5. Worth
With all the lives lost in the attack, this movie explores just how much those lives were worth as the director Sara Colangelo tells the story of the victim compensation fund and how $6 billion was distributed to the families and victims of the attack. This is a super interesting movie and quite different from the others on this list.
6. World Trade Center
The plot is very thought out as two-port authority police officers become trapped under the rubble of the world trade centers and have to try to get out. Starring Nicholas Cage, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and more – this movie takes a deeper look at what happened that day and tells a fantastic story.
7. Fahrenheit 9/11
This is actually a documentary not a film and it is made by filmmaker Michael Moore, who is very talented. It is a very raw and real look at the aftermath of the attacks, exactly how things happened, and what they did to the people of New York and all around the world.
8. Man on Wire
While this might not exactly be about 9/11 itself, it is an amazing watch that shows how incredible the twin tower structures really were, especially when viewed up close. Follow Phillipe Petit on his attempt to walk on a tightrope from one of the buildings to the other.
9. Remember Me
This is a rom-com featuring Robert Pattinson but there is actually a big twist at the end, which shows that the character he was playing was in the twin towers on September 11st 2001, and became a victim. This one is a pretty emotional watch even though you might not know what you are watching until the very end.
10. 9/11
Simply titled 9/11, this movie is an adaptation of a screenplay called Elevator. Starring Charlie Sheen, Whoopi Goldberg, and more – it explores the story of a random group of people trapped inside the twin towers on that day.
These movies about 9-11 all tell the story of that day in their own unique way with some amazing actors and actresses. If you want to watch a movie about September 11th, you wouldn’t go wrong with any from the list.
