This first-person documentary captures how those on the mountain feel about its dangers and how they feel about each other. The film follows this unique group of characters as their obsession with Everest becomes more intense and unrealistic.

2. Training Day

Directed by Antoine Fuqua. Starring Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Gbenga Akinnagbe.

In this New York cop drama, the climber-turned-cop (Hawke) is assigned a rookie partner (Washington) who is trained to climb with him and become a partner to his obsession. Along the way Washington’s character aspires to become an elite climbing partner but his mentor (Fuqua) will not let that happen until he proves himself on Everest.

3. Into Thin Air

Directed by John Krakauer. Starring Bob Harris, Ed Stafford and Scott Fisher.

This HBO original film based on Krakauer’s best-selling book was directed by the author and features both his voice and personal accounts in the film. It tells the story of an ill-fated expedition to climb Everest in 1996 that resulted in several deaths. The film offers a look into the darker side of climbing Everest when you consider that most climbers actually see it as a personal quest rather than a commercial enterprise.

4. Cliffhanger

Directed by Renny Harlin. Starring Sylvester Stallone, John Lithgow, Michael Rooker and Janine Turner.

After trying to rob an armored car transporting millions to a bank in Denver, Colorado, the high-jacked vehicle crashes in the Rocky Mountains leaving an injured driver (Stallone) with no other way out than straight up the side of a mountain. The rest of the crew is unable to slow him down and he quickly spirals out of control, trying to save his own life.

5. The Climb

Directed by Michael Powelson. Starring Robert Vaughn, Peter Breck, James Mitchum and Ralph Meeker.

If you love Westerns, this film is a great choice as it combines Western stories with snowcapped peaks and rugged mountain men at a time before commercial expeditions to Everest were possible. It follows a group of outlaws on snowmobiles who are trying to steal from other mountain men. The film was a huge box office hit, but also inspired its own line of action figures and movies.

In this documentary, director David Breashears recounts the 1996 Everest disaster by focusing on the ill-fated expedition led by Rob Hall and Scott Fischer.

7. 127 Hours

A true story based on Aron Ralston’s experience when an accidental fall in Blue John Canyon trapped his arm under a boulder for 5 days not allowing him to free himself. He then had to perform a self-amputation to free himself from being crushed by rock.
